How do I get songs off pictures and laptop broken?

I have a Toshiba laptop died, the power light lights but the screen remains completely black. I have lots of pictures and music on this laptop and did not backup my bad … So I went and bought a transfer cable, hoping that just sent it to my new computer. It has not. So I wonder if there is a way to get photos off the old and new, without having to pay hundreds for someone to do for Me, I'm a student and can follow the basic INSTUCTIONS fast, if you can help please let me know.
